On Thursday, September 20, over 250 people gathered at Whitaker & Atlantic for CASA’s Fifth Annual Cabin for CASA Memorial Fundraiser. The event raised over $115,000 to support CASA’s affordable housing mission.
CASA is a nonprofit affordable housing developer and property manager based in Raleigh and serving individuals and families across the Triangle. CASA owns and manages 490 apartments in Wake, Durham, and Orange counties and focuses on serving individuals living with disabilities, veterans, and working people earning a low wage. Many of CASA’s tenants have experienced homelessness.
The Cabin for CASA was established in 2013 by supporters Rusty and Nella DeMent, in honor of Rusty’s mother, Lynn Robertson DeMent. DeMent was a founding board member and long time supporter of CASA. Rusty’s law firm, DeMent Askew, is an annual sponsor of the event.
This year, the memorial fundraiser also honored CASA’s late CEO, Debra King, who died in April after a two-year battle with cancer. A group of King’s friends and family members raised over $10,000 in her honor. Their gifts are the first in the Debra K King Memorial Building Campaign, which will fund a new Wake County apartment community in King’s name in the future.
The event featured catering from Posh Nosh, a raffle and silent auction, and premiered a new brand video for the organization, created by Workshop Media.
The Cabin for CASA was supported by more than 40 generous local businesses and individuals. Title sponsors included Bank of America, Dan Ryan Builders, North State Bank, Reunion Marketing, PRMI, Will Morris / RBC Wealth Management, Kerry and Stewart Witzeman, and the Friends and Family of Debra King.
“The generous outpouring of support for this year’s CASA fundraiser is so appreciated by our staff, Board, and volunteers as we work to continue serving people and families who need housing. While the need is great, this support from our community makes a tremendous impact on our mission,” says CASA’s CEO Mary Jean Seyda.
