Gunny and James, two veterans

As of 2019, more than half a million people in the U.S. experience homelessness every day. Of those half a million people, roughly 35% — close to 200,000 — live unsheltered on the streets. The pervasiveness of this issue makes it important for people to help in the fight against homelessness in their local community.

In the North Carolina Triangle — specifically focused on Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, and Durham — CASA is proud to be part of the solution to homelessness. And 2019 was the best year yet: We raised $630,012 to help those in need.

Below, we’ve highlighted the positive impact CASA has had on the community. Read the full 2019 Annual Report here

How CASA Has Helped Veterans, Families & People Living With Disabilities

Veterans

In the U.S., an estimated 40,056 veterans experience homelessness on any given night, and another 1.4 million veterans are considered at risk of becoming homeless.

In 2019, CASA helped local veterans find affordable housing. In fact, 23% of CASA households are veteran households — over 100 veterans. We offer multiple housing units dedicated solely to veterans, and we proudly accept HUD-VASH vouchers.

Families

In the U.S., an estimated 58,000 family households experience homelessness on any given night. These households consist of a total of 184,661 individuals, including 109,719 children.

In 2019, CASA helped families find safe, permanent housing for their little ones. Roughly 10% of CASA tenants are children — allowing these kids to stay with their families instead of being possibly separated at homeless shelters.

People living with disabilities

In the U.S., an estimated 86,962 people living with disabilities experience chronic homelessness on any given night. Of the 86,962 people living with disabilities, 69% are living in unsheltered areas.

In 2019, CASA helped provide dedicated, permanent housing solutions to those living with disabilities. In fact, 73% of CASA households consist of at least one person living with a disability. CASA was originally started to help people with disabilities, and this remains a cornerstone of our mission.
