CASA  not only builds from the ground up, but also purchases aging buildings as preservation opportunities, ensuring the properties aren’t sold to a for-profit developer and residents aren’t displaced.

Martha lives at such a property in Durham. She was glad she didn’t have to find a new place to live when CASA bought the community, and is very happy with the renovations and upkeep. Martha is legally blind and was homeless for a time. Her caretaker, Lynn, started working with Martha while she stayed at a nearby homeless shelter, and has been caring for her ever since, for nearly 8 years. Its clear they have a strong bond.

Reflecting on her life, Martha says, “Sometimes things happen for the best. I have a much better life now.”
