At this time last year, we were looking forward to a year filled with gatherings and growth. We had launched our five year strategic plan with a goal of doubling the number of affordable homes in our community. Little did we know that we would soon fall out of the world to which we were familiar.
I’m proud of the ways our staff were able to quickly change course to work remotely, and reimagine ways to safely move individuals and families out of homelessness into apartments. And we confidently launched The Campaign for King’s Ridge to raise $13.7 million for 100 future apartment homes in Raleigh. With your partnership, we were flexible and resilient, and continued to work toward an end to homelessness in our community.
This year begins with the on-going challenges of the pandemic, an economic downturn, racial inequities, and now an even more fragile democracy. The COVID-19 crisis has deeply affected communities of color and low-income households – the people we serve at CASA. Keeping people stable in their homes is an important task. With your gifts and partnership, we continue to offer extra support to residents most effected by the health and economic crises.
Adding more homes for those still in need remains our priority focus, and we are pleased to announce that we will begin building in 2021! I look forward to future newsletters to share our progress, and the impact on individuals and families as they move into and enjoy the comfort of their new affordable apartment.
Despite the obvious challenges, I am filled with more hope now than ever. Last year taught me a lot about resilience and partnership. I know we’ll continue to see incredible acts of cooperation, displays of patience and understanding, and compassion as neighbors check on each other, staff go above and beyond, and our supporters give generously. I know our partners – YOU! – will continue to support us, to advocate for an end to homelessness, and to hold us up as we look forward to brighter days.
