The Green Chair Project is a Wake County nonprofit that provides gently used furnishings for a small fee to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness into secure housing.

Green Chair shoppers walk the furniture warehouse during personalized visits with staff and choose living room sets, kitchen items, and bath sets to take home with them. The donated items are carefully repaired and cleaned by volunteers and presented in a way that promotes dignity and respect.

CASA is one of 60 nonprofit partner agencies to The Green Chair Project. We’ve worked with the Green Chair Project for years, referring our newest tenants to the warehouse for a shopping trip to furnish their new homes. When CASA opened its veteran-specific properties in Raleigh and Durham, the Green Chair waved the fee for CASA’s new veteran tenants and donated the moving costs so our tenants could feel settled into their new homes as quickly as possible.

CASA volunteers often accompany new tenants to their shopping visits. “The Green Chair staff really goes out of their way to find the right match for our tenants,” said Kathleen DeRubio, CASA’s volunteer coordinator. “They always start the visit a little unsure of what to expect but then when they start to imagine their new place with furniture and art on the walls, they get so excited. Everyone always leaves so happy and feeling optimistic about their new life.”
