Families Moving Forward

Families Moving Forward (FMF) provides emergency shelter and supportive services to Durham families in need. Created in 2016 after the successful merger of Genesis Home and Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network, this organization serves 75-85 families and 160-200 children annually. Notably, FMF provides robust services for all children under its care, offering specialized programs allowing them to continue their education under guidance from specialized staff. Furthermore, FMF works with families for up to a year after they move into permanent housing to help them become stable and self-sufficient. FMF capably serves up to 21 families at a time at their 300 N. Queen Street facility in Durham while also working with partner agencies for families needing additional services.

Urban Ministries of Durham

Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD) provides food, shelter, and other assistance to homeless families and individuals in need. Formed in 2001 from the merging of the Durham Community Shelter for HOPE, St. Philip’s Community Cafe, and the United Methodist Mission Society, UMD now operates as a campus to more fully address the needs of the poor, hungry, and homeless in Durham. Thanks to the assistance of volunteers and donations, Urban Ministries of Durham serves over 6,000 people annually from their location at 410 Liberty Street. UMD keeps its doors open to everyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, disability, age, or sexual orientation.
