Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. After Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is intended as a day to focus on the season of giving.
At CASA, Giving Tuesday is a big deal – especially this year! We’re launching a new initiative called No Place Like Home, a program to provide financial assistance to tenants when an unexpected health crisis or other emergency threatens their stability. Keeping housing affordable for our tenants is CASA’s number one priority – tenants pay 30% of their income on rent so they have resources available for other things, like transportation, food, health care, and savings.
However, the average income among our permanent supportive housing tenants is only $11,000 a year. On such a limited income, one surprise expense can catapult a tenant into a financial crisis as expenses build up and become overwhelming. After a month or two of extreme financial stress, even a CASA tenant can have trouble paying her rent, and that can eventually put her housing at risk.
Luckily, it usually doesn’t take much to help someone fix a flat tire, keep a job, access nutritious food, or avoid accumulating late fees for utilities. With a little boost, we can prevent the cascading effect of one unexpected bill and help someone get back on track.
This #GivingTuesday, every gift given to our holiday campaign will be designated for this special new initiative to provide direct support to tenants in need. And, thanks to our generous friends at DRB Group, the first $5,000 raised will be matched dollar for dollar!
